I am a cat person, as are my kids, so this book immediately caught my eye. It went to my 9 year olds bookshelf and she eventually took it out to read. I read a little of the beginning with her, but then she continued on with it herself. I could see she was a little nervous about the beginning of the story where 3 kittens appear on the side of a busy highway and have to cross several lanes of traffic while the stray cats on the other side bet if they will make it. You knew they would make it, but you didn't have a warm, fuzzy feeling about the book at that point. As she read the book, she told me some parts confused her and she would have to read it over a few times. Apparently these kittens have some mystical power, but I don't believe it is ever clarified or fully explained what it is or where they came from. They caused good things to happen in the stray cat colony, but then they disappear mysteriously and she didn't get the ending. I read the last chapter and made an explanation that it all ended happily and the kittens were fine. In all, I suppose if I read the book to her, it might have made more sense, but I didn't really expect it to have parts in it that were open to your own interpretation, or reading between the lines to understand the power of the kittens.Tags : Highway Cats [Janet Taylor Lisle] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I am an older reader/listener of all things cat. While this book is supposed to be aimed at a younger audience I loved it myself. I even loaned the audio cds to my 70 + year old mom and she enjoyed it as well.
The characters are well developed and I was cheering for them throughout the book. I thought about the terrible burns inflicted on the once beautiful Khalia Koo by a cruel human. I felt deep sadness for the hard lives of the unloved, unwanted feral cats living in this little slice of land off of a busy highway. I wondered at the many cats and other animals who lose their homes to the endless human sprawl in our relentless quest to destroy more and more land for strip malls and parking lots.
I cared deeply for these cats and while I was relieved at the ending (all too often books with cats have tragic outcomes) there is an undercurrent of sadness throughout this story It is the kittens, the "magical" kittens who were tossed out of a truck along the side of the highway. The kittens who never grow, who do not speak, who have a mystical blue light around them.
It is my feeling the kittens did NOT make it across that busy highway. Were they ghosts? Angels? I am not sure but their ultimate fate in the end left me very disturbed and saddened.
This was interesting. At first the reader thinks the cats are abandoned but that is not so.These are magical kittens. Don't want to give away the plot, so you will have to read this book. A satisfying read. Recommended.
I loved how this book allows you to visualize what is happening It contains miracles that even I wouldn't be able to explain.
Sweet and entertaining!
this book was awesome if you like cats, then get this book!! it goes from sad to funny to happy and I would recommend this to cat lovers. 5 stars without a doubt
Sometimes adults need a feel good book to relax and enjoy. A mystical tale of amazing kittens who change the world for the Highway Cats. Kept me wondering who these kittens really were and where they came from. I am enjoying my 70's surrounded by my wonderful books. Thanks to for suggesting books that I probably never would have read. My life has expanded and this beautiful story, written for children is an inspiration for all ages. Oh, yes the book has a happy ending.
I got this for my two daughters (8 and 10).
The 10 year old devoured it in a day. I caught her crying (not hysterical, but emotional) and asked what was the matter. She said a part of the book was sad and made her cry. When she finished, she told me all about the story (including the sad part) and really seemed to like it.
Any book that brings that kind of emotion out of a kid and gets them wanting to tell others about it, is a great book.
My 8 year old says, "It was a really, really good book!"
