I have to confess, I'm not all the way done with the book yet - but I'm 140 pages in, and it's bedtime, and I don't want to put the book down. If that's not a five-star review, what is? David Shalleck cooks with words almost as well as he cooks with food; the book is evocative and pulsating, and he makes the reader feel his successes and failures as viscerally as if they were happening in real time. If you have the slightest interest in food or sailing, this book is exactly what you need.Tags : Mediterranean Summer: A Season on France's Cote d'Azur and Italy's Costa Bella [David Shalleck, Erol Munuz] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. “Saturday was dawning warm, with only a gentle wind under a light blue sky as we got under way. . . . Loved it and can't wait to try all of "Davide's" recipes and would love to sail to each and every port he describes. I can't imagine trying to prepare meals for so many guests confined to such a small galley nor could I bear the heat but he seemed to survive and skillfully cook fabulous food for very particular yacht owners, and he must have enjoyed it because he continued for several summers.
,
Overall I found this book visually tantalizing as the author depicts a chef's life aboard a summer yacht. He discovers passion in seeking out scrumptious ingredients in small coastal Italian towns. He also learns that his best creations are in part due to fresh ingredients along with a whole lot of love that is felt immediately to those tasting your foods in the very first bite.
Although, I enjoyed this easy read on a couple of dreary cold winter days, I felt a bit bored as the chef detailed his even his most mundane days. I kept finding myself jumping ahead for a faster paced section. For this reason, I gave it 3 stars.
This is a well-written, well-paced book rich in detail. It even includes suspense; I was sweating out the seemingly impossible tasks the author was faced with throughout the Summer sailing season. If you are looking for any sort of steamy yacht romance you will not find it here - SV Serenity was a completely professional workplace! The tensions between crew members, between the owners, and the strain of having to be perfect all the time are vividly portrayed. Very well done and very highly recommended. I most especially enjoyed his descriptions of Italy, as I have just wrapped up two years living in Napoli.
This was a fun book. I knew being a chef on a yacht would be challenging but I had no idea how much so!!! The descriptions of the space and lack thereof in the galley make for very interesting reading as do those of his yacht mates and boat owners. This is a great combo book of voyage/work/self-discovery. I love reading all about where the boat stopped and his buying trips for supplies. How David plans and cooks all the meals is also a wonder. The prequel to working on the boat is also fabulous reading as he worked in many restaurants in Italy gaining experience. By the end of the book, he has hopefully figured out a bit of a life plan as he seemed to be wandering/wondering for a long period in his life.
Excellently written. There's the excitement of how David finds his provisions in each port. There's also the fear of whether of not a particular meal will "work" with the extremely demanding owners of the yacht. And the suspense of how a meal will be prepared (for sometimes over 100 guests!) within the confines of a yacht's galley. Then there's the thrill of some moments of real sailing ! All this along with the purely human adventure in following David's search for mastering his profession.
I particularly enjoyed the map of the journey included on the inside cover, along with the detailed maps preceding each chapter. This added the additional benefit of the adventure being a descriptive travel guide as well ! And top this all off with the included bonus 50 pages of recipes at the end. (And each of these recipes include very specific & detailed instructions for preparation.) Bravo. Bravissimo Davide.
We used to sail on the San Francisco bay and have bare-boasted in the Caribbean and are sympathetic with the challenges of cooking on a boat. I can't imagine cooking the tips of dishes David prepared or in the quantity that was required. We have also visited many of the towns along the coast of France and Italy and relived many happy memories. Everything about David's experience was amazing and enchanting. I can't wait to try the recipes
I have read this book four times now. I'm not kidding.
And I loved it Every. Single. Time. I picked it up.
It's entertaining, gripping, mouth-watering, drool-worthy; much like Kathleen Kelly is "always in agony over whether Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy are going to get together", I always wonder if David will be able to satisfy the demanding la Signora; if he'll survive the summer onboard Serenity (and what will happen if he doesn't); and how long it will take before Captain Patrick and Mate Kevin will just come to blows in the tiny fo'c'sle (or maybe in the even smaller galley).
It's a fantastic book to read in the midst of a Seattle winter, when it's cold and rainy (or at least overcast) for six months straight and I forget what the sun looks like. It's an inspiration for my next coastal Europe trip; it makes me want to take a year off and visit deep into Provence, or Florence, or someplace where they know how to really cook and I can sit at their feet, learn, and of course, taste-test.
Pick up a copy; escape for a while; and be challenged in your own cooking. You never know where it will take you.
(On a side note, check what David's up to on his website . He's done all sorts of things since the epic summer on Serenity.)
I have to confess, I'm not all the way done with the book yet - but I'm 140 pages in, and it's bedtime, and I don't want to put the book down. If that's not a five-star review, what is?
