I really looked forward to the second in the series book of the Bill Dix Detective Novel Books. C.L. Swinney’s first book Gray Ghost was a good read action thriller and I was hoping the second book would bring much of the same police action. Swinney did not fail me. I did the preorder and was happy to start reading my kindle version the same day it was released. The Preface about his friend and partner Koti Fakava was interesting. As I read the book, the action and suspense was there as promised. I must admit the plot was pushed a little with Bill and Steve on some undisclosed vacation in Southern California together. Don’t they ever travel separate? Being from that area I enjoyed reading and recognizing all the local places and towns mentioned in the book. I did find the erratic sentence return spacing while reading a little a hard to follow. I guess as a book is sent for kindle version some things get messed up a little. Not sure of the procedures once a manuscript is submitted and who is in charge of the final product. For that reason alone I was going to give this book 4 stars and if I could 4.5 stars BUT then came a chapter in the book featuring Koti Fakava.
Now here was a character perfectly developed in a story. So many authors never find the method or time in developing a character. Swinney was able to describe exactly what Koti must have been. As I read the chapter I pictured this hard working honest to the core cop, mutli-tasking life threating events, all the while handling family and other officers asking for his help. A person who only wanted to do the best job he could and go home safe every night. Although I have never met the man I could see him perfectly in the way C.L. Swinney wrote about him. I know in real life Koti has passed, but hopefully he will find his way into future books working with the wild Bill Dix and Steve Peterson. Given that, I revisited my scoring and once again let the book earn a well deserved 5 stars. Koti saved the day.

The Cartel Enforcers The Bill Dix Detective Series Book 2 edition by CL Swinney Aeternum Designs Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I enjoyed Swinney's first book, Gray Ghost, so I decided to buy The Cartel Enforcers. I really enjoyed the fast pace sequences of the book. Swinney reminds us this is a law enforcement based story, not a love story.
I really enjoyed the twisting plots at every turn of the page. Reminded me of Star Wars finales, where theres multiple sequences going on at different locations.
I read some of the other reviews...yes, Swinney has a few grammatical errors, couple of redundant paragraphs. I actually contacted Swinney and we discussed his book, via email. Swinney told me about the nightmare of the publishing world...and how he basically published the book by himself. After our conversation, Swinney was super humble and admitted he's new at writing books. More importantly, Swinney is writing these books for pure enjoyment and to help the family of a fallen mentor/hero/officer who took him under the wing.
I respect that.
I bought Swinney's Sin City Assassin and can't wait to start reading the next installation of this series. Its also cool to see the progress of Swinney's writing abilities with each book.
Thanks for the great read Swinney.
Your Phan,
PLINY THE ELDER.
Admittedly when I first selected THE GRAY GHOST by CL SWINNEY I wasn't sure if I would like it or not. Well, I enjoyed it so much that I was rushing to my store to purchase THE CARTEL ENFORCERS. Chris just kept getting better. The character development was refreshing. With the seriousness of such a stressful, dangerous job the banter among DIX and Peterson were a real hoot. It reminded me of a couple dedicated former coworkers that I use to work with.
This was an action packed, fast moving, suspenseful thriller hard to lay down for bedtime or food breaks. So be prepared. CL Swinney writes the kind of novels that are food for thought. SWINNEY having lived the life in law enforcement it's also a reminder of how grateful I am to live in a nation protected by honest, dedicated men and women wearing a badge of honor who help keep our country safe. Oh, and did I also say he supports the JV Diabetes Foundation in his spare time? Maybe not your greatest reason to buy his book . Such a worthy cause for young children. Yet if you enjoy the excitement of a fast moving, bundle of rock n AWE then you're going to enjoy works by this talented writer!!!
I have read all the books In this series before writing this review. I am a rather picky reader of mysteries and this set is outstanding. Extremely well written as far as tight editing, interesting relatable characters, lots of suspense, a page turner.
The only drawback is that he didn’t write more in the series. I certainly look forward to reading everything else that this author writes. And even though I read hundreds of books a year I write very few reviews because rarely do they deserve the time it takes to post them
Thank you!!!
Did not like this one as will as the first Bill Dix novel. I kept wondering when Dix was going to put on a cape a be called Superman. He could do no wrong. He knew everything, when to speak up, when not to, when to ask questions, when to not say anything. He was just on vacation and then he was taking over the whole investigation in a strange town. In the end he was the only one who could interrogate a prisoner. I know he is the hero in the book but he could be human some time.
I also did not care for the number of times a head would be cut of by the cartel and used as a football. Little creepy for me.
Yes, there is a lot of action, nearly every page has something going on. But the above two things kinda turned the book off for me. Nobody can be that perfect and all knowing. Unless its my wife.
I hope Mr. Swinney sells many copies of his books and make mucho money but I do hope I enjoy the next one better if I get it.
